Normal?
Normal? The Festival of the Brain is an annual event held in Folkestone's Creative Quarter where Art meets Science to explore various
aspects of the brain. The Gratitude Domes and other artworks on the theme of addiction were commissioned by the organisers to
'dress' the venue. They formed the basis of a discussion between representatives from The Maudsley hospital, Public Health England,
drug and alcohol service providers, an audience and myself.
The domes are loosely based on antique French globe de mariee. These beautiful pieces including the brides tiara on a velvet cushion
along with the symbolism of blossom, birds and mirrors represented the newly weds hopes and expectations and symbolised a long and
abundant marriage, love, peace, longevity, virginity and children.
My own efforts are retrospective and made in gratitude. Old anatomical models of body organs and magic lantern slides with
temperance themed messages are decorated with apple blossom, hops, barley and grape vine, all of which are representative
of my alcoholism and are celebrations of my remarkably good health - in spite of the years of abuse, my parts all work quite well!
